We are Hiring Teachers in Philadelphia!
We’re growing our team and are currently looking to hire teachers in Philadelphia. Seeking dance artists who are community-minded, entrepreneurial, and excited about supporting the growth of Dance Church in their city.
The deadline to submit applications is September 20, 2024
⭐️ Mission / Goals
Dance Church is on a mission to bring the joy and release of dance to every body, while building sustainable systems of support for dance artists. Every class is taught by a dance artist, and Dance Church invites new audiences into dance spaces, enabling connection and financial support for teachers that complements their dance careers.
⭐️ About the Class
Dance Church® is an all-levels movement class that offers a fun and inclusive approach to dancing. Designed for people of all shapes and sizes, backgrounds and identities, Dance Church is a communal space for people who want to move their bodies. Teachers guide 60-70ish minutes classes of guided movement cues and free form dance breaks, accompanied by a curated playlist of multi-genre pop music, and encourage intuitive choices from all takers.
⭐️ What it means to be a teacher
We are looking for dance artists who are community-minded, entrepreneurial and excited about setting up classes and growing Dance Church in their city. You will become part of the Dance Church teacher community, receive in-depth training and ongoing support for class structure and planning, music curation, community-building, and access to marketing and technology mentorship and resources. Teachers set up the venues for their classes and set their own schedule, and can also teach pop-up classes while traveling and on tour.
⭐️ How to apply
Start your application here! We will reach out to you within 1-3 weeks and those who qualify will be invited to a 60-minute screening call before the decision is finalized.
⭐️ What is the time commitment?
If you’re invited to become a teacher, congratulations! You’ll meet your cohort and receive in-depth training covering best practices for the class, choosing and setting up a venue, building a community, and ongoing marketing and tech. The training has remote sessions as well as asynchronous learning.
Getting a class off the ground typically takes a few hours a day for a few weeks. The main work is to go through training, setting up your venue, and marketing for your class. After that, it’s 5-7 hours per class including playlist building, getting the word out, and offering the class itself.
Teachers have flexibility to set their own schedule through training, class setup, and teaching classes. All Dance Church Teachers and team members meet monthly for one hour on zoom. This ongoing meeting provides a rhythm for collaborative development, company updates and training.
⭐️ Compensation
Philadelphia Teachers are W2 employees and are paid $60 per class with up to 20 paying takers, and $100 per class + $3 per paying class taker for classes with over 20 paying attendees. For example if 10 people attend, this is $60; if 30 people attend this is $190; if 60 people attend this is $280. Teachers can expense $75 to $100 per class for their venue, depending on demand in their city, and will be provided with necessary equipment like an AV adaptor, sweat towel, Aesop spray, and monthly Spotify playlist account. Dance Church will not reimburse for travel or venue equipment like speakers. In cities where community has been built over a long period of time, we have had over 100 people come per class. Please be aware that while Dance Church will help with marketing, growing a community to this size will take a lot of dedicated work over a long period of time. We are looking for dance artists who are willing, excited and passionate about building and actively engaging with the local community.
⭐️ Inclusivity Dance Church is committed to creating spaces that are equitable and inclusive for all backgrounds, identities, abilities, and body types. This pursuit is woven into every action we take as a company- in classes, the organization, and the community. We have a lot of work to do, and it will take time to reach this vision.
Over the past few years we have:
- $5 tickets to in-person classes for dance artists through this application process
- $0 tickets for BIPOC dance artists through this application process
- Fundraised and amplified multiple non-profit organizations
- Implemented equitable hiring practices to prioritize a diverse applicant pool
- Continued conversations and training around accessibility and inclusivity in our classes
⭐️ To apply, please complete this form and provide the following:
- CV/Resume (Please include all job experience in and outside of Dance, i.e - administrative, service, management, self ran business, non-profit, etc.)
- 2 minute (max) Self-Tape (Introduce yourself, share an excerpt of something you worked on recently that you’re proud of, or represents who you are as a person and artist, and attach any teaching excerpts if applicable.)
Applications will remain open after the Sept 20th deadline, however, once a teacher is established in a city, we will wait to add a second teacher until there is a sufficiently large community so that classes don't decrease in size.
